Last Day of October 2013

In just a matter of a few hours, October will be history and we'll be thrown into the month of November which brings thoughts of all the holiday craziness. I'm not looking forward to it. Our summer weather, with the joys of being outdoors, left too quickly with very little warning. One day it was here --- the next day it was gone. That's depressing.

This post is in honor of a very special lady. Yesterday was my Hubby's mother's birthday. Frances would have been 101 yrs. old. This is a picture of her on her wedding day to Bob's father, Richard, on Feb. 14, 1935. She was 23 yrs. old.
Frances was a strong, loving woman... the "glue" that held her family together. She and Dick had 4 children which she adored -- Jack, Rick, my husband Bob the baby and one daughter, Colleen. Frances worked from the age of 12 to help support her family and continued to work all the years she and Dick were married. Her faith and her church, St. Mary's Catholic church here in town, was important to her. She always made sure her children were sparkling clean and in the pew with her every Sunday and every special mass in between. The last several years of her life, she was head cook for the church and the school. Even with the small food budget they had, she always managed to stretch it out and give the children a hot, healthy lunch every day. They all loved her.  Francis died on Mar. 13, 1966 of cancer.

Bob and I had been married 1 month and 1 day when she died. I had a mother-in-law for such a short time, but I'm so glad I got to spend time with her and got to know her during the 3 yrs. that Bob and I dated. I still miss her.

The good news today is the worst of the predicted storm is going south of us. It's not good for the people in that area because tornadoes are developing over them. All we're getting is a constant rain with the possibility of high winds this evening. The temperature is 63°, comfortable but wet.

I hope you're having a great day.
Until next time.........

Hodgepodge Wed. 10-30-2013

Today is Wednesday so that means more hodgepodge questions from Joyce, and as usual, they make me think long and hard on each one. I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts.

1. What's something you're dealing with that might be described as tricky?

As most of you know, I recently started taking piano lessons and I've found each new piece I come to in my books are, to me, very "tricky". I know what keys I'm suppose to hit but it takes me a long time putting it together so it has some resemblance of a song.

2. What's your treat of choice?

Staying with the Halloween theme, I'd have to say Milky Way Simply Caramel candy bars. They haven't been on the shelves here for very long and since I'm a sucker for any kind of caramel, I had to try them. Now I'm hooked. I went through my grandson's trick-or-treat bag to see if he'd gotten any. I'm bad.

3. Did you/will you carve a jack-o-lantern this month? Which real (living or dead) or fictional 'Jack' would you most like to meet in person? Why?

I don't do pumpkins. Some carvings I've seen are cute and they put a lot of work into it, but it's not my thing. A real Jack I'd like to meet? I can't think of anyone right now. I have a nephew Jack, but I've already met him. hahaha

4. In your opinion, what's the grossest sounding word in the English language?

"Puke" .... need I say more?

5. When did your heart last skip a beat?

I'm on Facebook and so many of my contacts are trying to out-do each other with the scary videos. I got curious last night (and you know what curiosity did to the cat) but I watched it. (I tried to save it to post on here, but I couldn't.) Half-way through the video I leaned in closer, trying to see Michael Jackson's ghost and got the surprise of my life. I even jumped out of my chair. So, I know my heart skipped a beat... maybe even 2 or 3.

6. Monster Mash by Bobby 'Boris' Picket, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon, or Ray Parker Jr.'s Ghostbusters  ..... your favorite 'scary' tune?

I really don't have one. I can't say I've ever heard of a 'scary tune'. I do like these songs, have from the first time I heard them, but they're just very catchy tunes.

7. It was a dark and stormy night when _________.

.... there was a scream from our daughter's room. Our dog Pepper, a shepherd mix, had been pacing the floor, something had her nervous. When our teen-aged daughter screamed, we ran into her room to find her sitting in the corner. She told us she saw a shadow of someone through the curtains on her window. My husband, Bob, ran back to the living room, calling the dog and opened the front door. Pepper took off in a flash, rounding the corner of the house before Hubby got off the step. When Bob got around the corner, he saw Pepper on the heels of a man, heading for the corn field behind our house. Bob gave the dog a few seconds, then called her back, expecting to find the person's pants in her mouth. We never found out who it was, but we didn't have anymore problems after that. I'm sure Pepper made it very clear she was protecting her family and if they tried that again, she wouldn't hesitate to take a chunk out of their behind.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

The weatherman is forecasting what could be called "severe" weather for us for tomorrow, Halloween. There's an unstable front moving in with high winds and warmer temperatures. It was Nov. 10, 2002 when an EF4 tornado came through our town, killing 4 people, and turning the whole west side of town into a pile of boards, bricks and trees. I'm praying we don't have a repeat of that.

Tues. Oct. 29, 2013

My day started off just like every other day and nothing changed. Same old stuff.

Daughter #3 stopped in this afternoon. On Monday and Tuesday she has Hospice patients. The doctor's have seen first hand how a gentle massage helps their patients with their pain. She's had a very busy month, but this past week 2 of her clients lost their battle. It's hard for her. She has to remember about getting too attached. Working with Hospice patients takes a special kind of person.

Our weather wasn't bad today. The sun was out from behind the clouds, 61° and a light breeze. This is going to be changing in the next 24 hrs. the forecasters are saying. We could be in for some severe weather by Thursday.

A friend posted something just recently on FB and I had to share it. I make a point to not get into politics on here, but with the web site for the affordable care sign-up is top news, being the disaster it is, this woman made it a point to tell her story. If you don't care to read this, believe me.... it's alright. I understand.

Here it is..........

A post from the Obamacare Website:

"I actually made it through this morning at 8:00 A.M. I have a
preexisting condition (Type 1 Diabetes) and my income base was 45K-55K annually.

I chose tier 2 "Silver Plan" and my monthly premiums came out to
$597.00 with $13,988 yearly deductible!!!

There is NO POSSIBLE way that I can afford this so I "opted-out" and
chose to continue along with no insurance.

I received an email tonight at 5:00 P.M. informing me that my fine
would be $4,037 and could be attached to my yearly income tax return.

Then you make it to the "REPERCUSSIONS PORTION" for "non-payment" of
yearly fine.

First, your drivers license will be suspended until paid, and if you
go 24 consecutive months with "Non-Payment" and you happen to be a home owner, you will have a
federal tax lien placed on your home.

You can agree to give your bank information so that they can easy
"Automatically withdraw" your "penalties" weekly, bi-weekly or monthly!

This by no means is "Free" or even "Affordable."

I hope you had a good day.

♪♪ Monday ♫♫

Happy Monday!! I hope, whatever you have to do today, that it will be a good day.

This past Saturday was our Halloween activities in town. Daughter #3 and the grandsons handed out candy on Main Street for the Harvest Festival with the local merchants. She had never done that before and when she came down here after it was over, she said they had fun but she was so disappointed with most of the "adults". The children would all look into the bowls and pick out one or two pieces. However, the adults would come up to the table and literally grab 2 and 3 HANDS-FULL. I just don't understand people like that.
""yey! another freebie -- they have lots of money -- they bought it for us -- we deserve it -- so grab all you can. ""
It's sad, really, but this socialistic mentally is our country's downfall.

When the kids all got here to our house, I fed everyone and they got a chance to rest. Then it was time to put on the make-up and the costumes so they could go trick-or-treating.

Curtis (grandson #2) with friend Tashia.

Curtis, Teresa (daughter #3), Tashia and little Bryan (grandson #6)

Jr. (grandson #5) was here, but he has never liked Halloween and still refuses to dress up or participate. His father used to torment him and call him names because he wouldn't wear the costume they bought him. I was hoping Jr would feel better this year without his dad being here (due to the divorce) and I think he did. He eventually caught up with his brothers and went to a couple houses with no costume, but he came back with a smile. I was so glad.

Our weather was not very good Sat. It was chilly, 51°, and the wind was horrible. At least it didn't rain until they all got back to the house. I think that's why I hurt so bad yesterday, from being out in the cold wind all afternoon. The weatherman said this morning that we have been cooler than Anchorage, Alaska.

Yesterday, we did get up and go to church. We had 3 baptisms. We've just started going to this church, so we didn't know what the service would be like. A mother (widow) and her small son gave their testimony and both were baptized. It was emotional.

Bob and I went up for lunch after church, just the 2 of us. When we got home, I was hurting and cold, haven't been able to warm up, so I laid down for awhile. I hardly ever do that, but my bed felt so good.

Today, I have a load of laundry to do, then I'm going to practice, practice, practice. I haven't touched the keyboard all weekend. The sun is shining today and 60°, so Hubby's going to mow the grass -- one more time before the snow flies.

Until next time...........

Sat. Oct. 26, 2013

I just realized I hadn't posted anything since last Wed. Did anyone miss me? hehehe

The last couple days have been nerve-wracking. I spoke too soon about Daughter #3 feeling better. Thursday morning she fell in the parking lot at work and injured her wrist. Being a massage therapist, she needs her hands and arms or she can't work. She thought she was ok but the pain kept getting worse. She ended up going to the emergency room for an x-ray. They insisted on doing all sorts of tests because they were more concerned in WHY she fell. It seems she blacked out from a heart arrhythmia -- due to the stress she's been under. But the wrist isn't broken, thank goodness. She went back to work.

Today is the town's Harvest Festival uptown on Main Street, then the kids have their trick-or-treat from 4:00-6:00 pm. Daughter #3 is uptown right now, joining all the merchants in the annual giving out of candy and prizes to the kids. Last year they each had over 300 kids going from store to store. For a small town like our's, that is quite a lot.

After she gets done there, she's bringing the boys and a couple of their friends to our house where they can eat and get dressed in their costumes before heading out in our neighborhood. We always walk with them and keep them in the area where I know they'll be safe. The fire dept. usually comes down our street, tossing candy from the trucks. Sometimes I think I get just as excited as the kids. Parts of me hasn't grown up yet. Bob and I used to dress up too when they were little and we stood out in the front yard passing out candy.

I just finished making some hot chicken in the crock-pot for sandwiches later. That way they can eat whenever they want.

The weather isn't very good for the kids today. It's dark and gloomy, 52°, but it's very windy. I don't know if we'll have too many little ones at our door, but the candy is ready for those that do come. The first few years after we moved in  here, we had over a hundred kids.

That's about all I have to report today. I hope you have a great weekend.

Until later..........

My Hodgepodge for Wed. Oct. 23

1. When it comes to good manners, what two top your list of most important?

Show respect and not let the door slam in her face.
Say 'thank you' once in awhile.

2. Let's open a proverbial can of worms...Common Core.  Are you familiar with the term (talking education reform in the USA)?  If so, care to share your thoughts? In your opinion, what is one of the biggest issues schools (in your home country) face today?

I've never heard of that phrase, but I know our schools need a lot of reform. There is no discipline and the children have no respect for anything or anyone. Too many of them aren't interested in learning or being told what to do. There has to be a way to get through to the troubled children, especially the ones from a messed up home life.

3. Name a celebrity whose fashion sense you admire and share why.

There is absolutely no celebrity that I care to admire or pay much attention to what is being worn. I just know there's several that need to be taught modesty.

4. How are you affected by the changing seasons?

In the spring, the pollen  bothers my eyes and nose …  In the summer, I have trouble breathing in the humidity and heat, forcing me to stay inside in the a/c ….. The fall, I start getting headaches from the cooler air and the constant changing barometric pressure …. The winter cold makes my muscles ache from shivering as soon as I step outside.
You asked. :)

5. Scariest book you've ever read?

How about the book I got from Medicare?
Seriously though, I love to read a good mystery and a lot of the ones I've read have been murder mysteries, but I can't say I've ever read a book that actually scared me.  I've cried, I've laughed, I've gotten excited, but never scared.

6. What time of day are you most hungry? What's your go-to snack?

My worst time of day for me is always in the evening, around 9:00 pm. Don't tell my doctor, but I always go looking for something sweet.

7. Do you lean more towards being too needy or too independent? Which do you find harder to deal with in others?

I'm an independent person, always have been. And that's been my downfall. When I get my mind on something, I'll step out and try to do it myself. Sometimes I'm successful, other times I'm a total failure, then I have to ask for help.
Which do I find harder to deal with in others? That would have to be the needy. Being just the opposite, I have trouble with people  who act as though they're helpless and can't do things for themselves.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Right now I have too many swirling around in my head I can't straighten them out. So, I have to omit this one.

I hope you've had a great day.

Tues. Oct. 22, 2013

The unemployment numbers just came out for September 2013. They're saying it's looking better. It dropped 1.2%, down to 7.3%. These numbers are not accurate, tho', but the government looks at that and says "we're on the road to recovery". Maybe we are, to a certain extent, but all the numbers mean is that 7% of the population of our country is still drawing benefits. It does not include all those that had their benefits run out and they're not actively seeking a job. Those people aren't counted in this.

Our local weatherman is telling us to look for a mixture of rain and snow tonight. Yuk! The temperature for today is only 47° and 31° tonight. At least we had some beautiful blue sky this morning. I enjoyed that.

Last night I was on Facebook ( as usual ) when I saw a posting on one of the pages I follow. It had to do with our government, under the "Affordable Care Act", now has agents that will engage in "home health visits" (as they call them) for those in certain “high-risk” categories."  It's always been part of the whole system (that none of our congressmen read). And it's NOT voluntary. It's mandatory. I had no sooner hit POST when one of my 'friends'  (I don't even know the woman) commented, calling me a liar. She said that "the government doesn't have the people or the resources to visit thousands of homes just to check up on those that signed up for Obamacare". At first I laughed because I thought she was joking. Then I realized this woman was serious but she has no clue on what's happening.  I may be wrong, but I didn't appreciate what she said.

Until next time...........

Monday, Oct. 21, 2013

Thank you, thank you, to my dearest online friends for offering up a prayer for my daughter. She is feeling a little better.

I hope everyone has had a good Monday.

Our weather today was a pleasant 61°. The sun was shining all morning, but the forecast is rain tonight and down to 33°. We're now under a freeze warning. The weatherman says this week could bring our first snowflakes.

Good news from our newspaper:  they caught our local Bonnie and Clyde! They tried to rob another person but this homeowner knew the description of the truck they were driving and called the police right away. They were caught not far from my house.

This Saturday, the 26th, is the town's trick-or-treat. They're having a fall festival all day and my daughter will be passing out candy on Main Street from 9-noon. They're having all sorts of activities going on up town, then costume judging at the fair grounds. From 4-6pm is trick or treat door to door. Our town has done this for several years, so the kids are all home before dark.

I guess our grandson (age 9) wants to dress up as Sal from Duck Dynasty. Now our daughter is trying to find the long hair and beard for him. The show is so popular, which I still don't understand why, so maybe finding the get-up for him might not be that difficult, hopefully. I thought about calling my hairdresser to have her save all remnants from haircuts this week and make our own, until I thought about all the work involved. Hopefully we can find something already made.

Since there are so many of us who love this time of year, and enjoy the month of October, I thought I'd give you a little bit of information on things we can celebrate.
Did you know, October is….

  • National Toilet Tank Repair Month (Hubby will be happy to hear that)
  • National Popcorn Poppin' Month
  • Positive Attitude Month
  • Wishbones for Pets Month (I have no idea what that means)

And for today, Oct. 21… it is
  • National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day ( I really should do that)

"I know the voices in my head aren't real..... but sometimes their ideas are just absolutely awesome!"

Until later.......

Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013

Before I say anything, I want to wish my friend and teacher a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope you had a great day, Julie.

We got up early this morning and went to church. It was a good service. Pastor Clark has started a new teaching series from Malachi.

After service we went to Bob Evans with Jack and Elaine (Bob's brother and his wife) and Mark and Joyce (friends). The 6 of us haven't been together like that in ages. We all attend church together but usually go our separate ways afterwards. Today was good, being with them and talking for hours.

Yesterday, my youngest daughter came in after work. She was in bad shape. Every time she looked at me, she just cried, couldn't talk to me. Her nerves are tied in knots. She has so much she's dealing with right now, she's overwhelmed. She needs prayer. I'm really worried about her. If you'd say a little prayer for her, it would mean so much. She knows the Lord and has learned that He can help, but you know the saying... "can't see the forest for the trees". I think all she can see are the problems in front of her right now.

We had another pleasant day. The sun was shining beautifully and the temperature was around 62°. The forecast for this coming week says "cold". I'm not ready.... no one is.

I went through my closet yesterday to see what I had in the way of warm clothes and coats. I need to go shopping. I hate trying to find something, anything, that I'd like to wear. It all seems so ugly on the rack. But on the good side, I found a coat I'd forgotten I had and it still fits. It's like new. However, the Salvation Army is going to be getting a black bag full of those little things in the back of the closet that I finally have to admit that "I'll never get back into that".

I think I hear a nice hot cup of chamomile tea is calling me.
I hope you've had a nice day.
Until next time.............

The Baby Cage

Happy Friday, everyone. I hope you're having a great day.
Here in my little corner of the world, the sun is shining big and bright; the sky is a fantastic blue and the temperature is around 62° this afternoon. Very nice.  Tonight it's going to be another chilly night, down to 43°.

I was shocked when I saw this old photo a friend had sent me in an email.
The caption read:  "How could parents ensure that their children were getting sunlight and fresh air when living in apartment buildings? The baby cage, ca. 1937"

Can't you just hear the outcries if someone would do this today? It reminded me of all the news reports and the criticism from people when the photo of Michael Jackson became public of him holding his son out of the window for his fans to see.

What has changed?

I'm sure this child's parents loved him and didn't want to see any harm come to him. They wanted him to grow up healthy and strong. Consequently, they had this "cage" installed just for him.

Have we become wiser to the dangers? Or is it that we've seen so much tragedy and abuse to children that scenes like this make us shout "NO"?

Until later…..

Thurs. Oct. 17

The Weather:
It's an awful nasty day for us. It's dark, rainy and cold. We finally had to turn on the furnace this morning. The temperature in the house was falling toward that 59° mark. Our forecast for the next several days doesn't sound good. By the first of next week, our weatherman says the temperature will struggle to get over 46° during the day. Ugh….

In the morning news:
We used to live in a quiet, fairly crime-free area, but not anymore. We have a man and woman team that's "working our neighborhood". And it's a bit un-nerving. It's hard not to become  paranoid, but we have to think and take better precautions these days.

This team of thieves approaches a house where they know a woman is inside, alone. The female goes to the front door, gets the homeowner outside on the pretense that she's with the power company and needs to show her some lines on a nearby pole that the repair men will be coming  to fix. In the meantime, the male has gone around and got inside the house through the backdoor, taking cash, jewelry, laptops and anything else they can carry off.

Precautions:
1) Don't believe everything the stranger at your door has to say.
2) Always ask for identification.
3) Stay inside your house.
4) Don't let the stranger inside.
5) And if they stretch their necks to see the room contents behind you, slam the door, lock it and call the police.
There is evil all around us.

Until next time……

Be safe.

Hodgepodge Wed. 10-16-2013

It's Wednesday so that means a whole new bunch of questions to find personal answers to.

1. What was your biggest worry five years ago?  Is it still a worry?

My youngest grandson was born with a breathing problem and had to be monitored 24 hrs. a day. If his alarm went off at any time, we had to get him to his breathing machine immediately. In the mist was a medicine that would open up his airways. We were all so scared that he might not make it. Thankfully today he's a strong little guy, healthy and happy. No more problems. Thank God.

2. Yesterday (October 15th) was National Grouch Day...what makes you grouchy? What cheers you up when you're feeling grouchy?

Getting up in the morning. What cheers me up? My coffee and my husband sitting at the table reading the morning paper.

3.  In one word, how does it feel to be photographed?

Uncomfortable.  I don't take a good picture at all, so when someone points a camera at me, I'm trying to figure out, in a split second, what can I do to make it look better. However, the best pictures I have of the "true me" were the ones my youngest daughter has taken when I didn't know it. I guess there's a lesson here.

4. Besides your parents, who would you say had the greatest influence on you in choosing your life path?  Explain.

I'm going to be quite honest here. I can't think of a single soul, besides my parents.
On second thought, there is one person… my husband. When he told me 47 years ago that he wanted to marry me and raise a family together, that was all I needed. I chose that as my life path… a wife and mother. And I don't regret it one bit.

5. The crisp days of autumn are here ...what's something you like to eat, but only if it's crisp?

Chili. That's almost self-explanatory. I love a mild chili, but I just can't eat it on a hot day. There has to be a chill in the air.

6. What's the most useless object you own?

My treadmill. It's not helping me one bit. It's useless. It just sits in the corner and collects dust. :)

7.  Share a favorite fall memory.

Picture it…. 1963… small town in Ohio. It was a cold evening with a few snow flakes in the air. Our high school football team was up against a big rival school. My girlfriend and I decided to go to the game. Unbeknownst to me, she'd made plans to meet her boyfriend there.  When her and I got there, she scanned the whole stadium to find where he was sitting. We climbed up the stairs and he stood up to allow us to sit on the inside, away from the steps. The guy next to him moved over so her and I were seated between them. She then introduces me to the guy on my right. It was her boyfriend's brother. Him and I got along good that evening. He walked me home and we talked all the way. I had a great time.  Three years later, we were married.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

There's lots of noise outside. The city has finally decided to do something about the pot holes in our street. Our street is 2 miles long (I know because I walk it) and it leads out to the cemetery gates. Consequently, all the funeral processions go past our house. The street  was suppose to be repaved this year, but since the project on Main Street is taking longer than planned, and costing more money than planned, our street won't be done for another 4 years. So they decided to just chip and seal.  We can't get out of our drive until they're done in this block, but it's ok. It's better than what we had. It's just going to be slow moving for several days, what with the fresh tar and the stones hitting the car.

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Gloomy Tuesday

We woke up to dark sky  and some patchy fog this morning. As the day went on, it looked more and more like it was going to rain any minute. The temperature got up to around 60° and the rain didn't start until around 6:00 pm.

On a better note: I had a good day today and I'm feeling on top of the world.  Well, maybe that was a little exaggerated but it has been a good day.

I think I have to credit part of my mood to my teacher. The child in me flies high when she's done some hard work and is told she did great. I think we're all that way. We sometimes need encouragement and praise. I know it makes me feel like pushing on a little harder, accomplishing more and know I will be able to reap the benefits of my hard work.  Don't you sometimes feel that way.

Then, as a treat, Hubby took me out for supper. We went to Bob Evans, nothing special, but the food's good and I like the coffee. On the way back to the car, he tells me "we should open our own coffee shop". I asked "why would you want to do that when we already have 2 in town?" He then told me what he just paid for the coffee in there….. $2.50 per cup!

Our youngest daughter came in at noon and brought me up-to-date on the big career decision she has to make. I mentioned it in a post last week, but there are still things she needs to consider and decide upon, so nothing's been set in stone.  It may be 2 weeks before I can tell anyone, but we're praying this is the right move for her and that it will work out, for her and her  sons.

Speaking of my grandsons, she told me she had to make 3 trips to their school today. She had to leave work by 3:00 so she could pick up Jr. (age 9)after school at 3:20, back at 4:30 to pick up Bryan (age 7) from the after-school Bible study, then back again at 7:00 for a school meeting. That's a lot of running back and forth, especially since the school is 10 miles from where she lives.  Jr. didn't want to go to the weekly Bible study, but Bryan was very excited about the whole idea and pleaded with his mom to let him sign up, even though it meant another trip for her. She told me he's doing very good and he loves it. I think between him and the other 6 grand-children, he's our spiritual one. He has very strong feelings and understands more of the Bible than we ever thought he would at this age. I'm so pleased and happy for him.

I hope you've had a good day.

Until next time……….

Beautiful Sunday, Oct. 13

We missed church again this morning. I think Bob and I are fighting a bug. I've been coughing the last couple days and he has a sore throat. We thought it best not to expose our friends and family to this, just in case we're contagious, which we probably are.

Today is another beautiful day. Blue sky and 71°. Best we enjoy it because by the middle of the week, we could see our first hard frost. Cold weather is on the way. I wanna go south for the winter.

Nothing much is going on here in my world. I've been watching videos and reading updates on what's happening  in Washington DC this weekend. First was the Truckers Ride for the Constitution, but what few news people I saw had all kinds of other names for it. What little they know and even less than they reported. I thought the media might be finally getting on the right path. Guess not.

Then today was the Veteran's March to the Memorials. That got a little more exciting, if I can use that term. The barricades came down, then security put them back up, and the people took them back down. Some men even picked them up and started walking toward the White House with them. They said they were taking them back to the owner. I had to shut down so I don't know how far they got. I just know there were hundreds of people walking from the WW2 Memorial and on to the others. For the most part, it was a peaceful demonstration.

I can't help but wonder if anyone on Capital Hill was actually  aware of what was outside their windows. Did Barry know anything? Or was he off playing golf in another city or country? Oh, that's right… I forgot, he was in a meeting with Congress on the budget bill. Wonder how that went. I heard last night they had given in and gave him 99.9% of what he wanted, but he still denied it.  Then he still says it's all the Republicans' fault.

I saw on TV today they've done a remake of the movie "Bonnie and Clyde". I liked the original with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. This one is made for TV and will be 4 night mini-series. I may watch it just out of curiosity.

 I hope you've had a good day.

Until next time……

Friday, Oct. 11, 2013

Hey, Charlie Brown.... It's Friday!  I hope you're having a good day. There's not much happening here, same ol' stuff. But that's not all bad. I woke up this morning. That's good. I put on warm clothes. That's good. I ate breakfast. That's good. And the sun is shining. That's good. So... today is a good day! Right?

I didn't have any plans when I woke up this morning, but that did change this afternoon. Afterall, I had my clothes on, so why not leave the house? I've always been a spontaneous person.

We have a new clothing store in town and I've read comments from several on FB about finding new clothes for $2 and $5, so I went out today for the first time. I don't know if I'm just picky or what it is, but I couldn't find one thing that interested me. To me it all looked like stuff that had been stored in boxes in someone's attic for years.

Speaking of being spontaneous, the craziest thing I ever did in my life, was back in 1968, B.K. (before kids). Bob was in the Army and stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C. He was there for basic and after 5 months, I got to missing him so much. We'd only been married a few months when he left. I was working a full-time job in a factory (and hated every minute of it). My girlfriend stayed with me off and on during that time because her husband was also in basic and we were on our own. One Friday afternoon, when I got off work at 3:00, I made that big spontaneous decision. Connie worked until 5:00 so I called her and told her I was all packed and was leaving for Ft. Jackson. She told me to wait until she got off work... she was going with me. Off we went, taking turns and driving straight through. We had no trouble getting onto the base, found our guys and then headed back home Sunday. Everything went well and it's an experience I'll never forget.

Until next time.........

A BEAUTIFUL DAY:
We are being teased with another spring-like day. Bright sunshine, beautiful blue sky and a warm breeze. It's suppose to be around 73° this afternoon. Our trees still aren't turning color very fast. Most are either still green or dry and falling off the trees. No reds.

It was hard to get out of bed this morning. I was nice and warm under the covers but the room was cold. It got down to 42° last night. I jumped into a hot shower right away which helped. I'm not turning on the furnace yet. I'll put on a sweater until the house warms up.

HUNGRY?
Have you ever gotten hungry -- for something -- but you can't figure out what it is? I've been this way for several days now and it's awful. I cook for us every day but nothing seems to satisfy that craving in me. I'm not sure how to find out what it is I'm looking for.

MAYBE THESE?
I've been on a peanut butter kick lately so I decided to bake some cookies this afternoon. Bob, naturally, digs into them while they're still warm. That's always the best time to eat them, no matter what kind of cookie.

Add a cup of hot coffee and I have a great snack.

They are good, but that's not it.

THIS EVENING:
Is all mine. Hubby has an NRA meeting at the Elk's Lodge and they're even providing dinner. I didn't have to cook for us, but now comes the big decision.... what am I gonna have? Maybe a bowl of soup. Left-overs in the fridge? No! I hate left-overs. Oh, I'll find something.

On that note, I'm closing this and wish you a pleasant evening.
Until later.....

AN OLD 'CHUCKLE':
When my husband and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a service, we were told the keys had been locked in it.
We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door.
As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.
‘Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'its open!'
His reply, 'I know. I already did that side.'

Hodgepodge Wednesday 10-9-2013

It's another Hodgepodge Wednesday already! I think these are coming closer together each week. I just answered the last questions. Who stole my days in between?

1. The USA will mark Columbus Day this year on Monday, October 14th. What's something you need or want to explore (literally or metaphorically speaking)?

I would like to explore the small village in Switzerland where my niece lives. I became interested when she first moved there with her new husband and she has told me a little about her new way of life, the village where she now lives, her home, transportation she has to take to get to the nearest railroad, I find it all so very fascinating. To a girl that was born and raised in a small town in Ohio, USA, I can't imagine what all she had to adjust to, not to mention learning a whole new language in order to communicate with her inlaws and get around.

2. The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, or Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty...who do you most love to hate?

I can't think of anyone right now except for another cartoon character... how about Druella from "101 Dalmatians" . The first time I saw that film was with my little grandson and when she appeared trying to steal the puppies, the look at the little guy's face was precious. I guess that's why I thought of her.

3. Is open-mindedness a virtue?

To a certain extent, it is. It's good to have a measure of open-mindedness in order to be teachable, but not be so open-minded that we are wishy-washy and easily influenced by every person or idea that comes our way.

4. How often do you weigh yourself?

I know the "experts" don't recommend this but I weigh myself about every morning. I know my body and how it reacts to certain things and certain foods, so by keeping track of my daily weight, I know what I'm doing right and most importantly, what I'm doing wrong.

5. This question comes to you courtesy of Rebecca over at Making Memories, so thanks Rebecca!

Costa Rica was recently named the happiest country in the world on the Happy Planet Index. What's the happiest country in the world to you, and what makes it so?

Since I've never been to another country, I really can't answer this. However, I've noticed how different people act in other parts of our country. I can't say the people in the south, Texas for example, are happier, but they act like it. They're friendly, they don't hesitate to give a smile to a stranger and I feel their whole outward demeanor shows inner happiness. I live in Ohio and I can testify to the fact that the majority of people around here are NOT happy.

6. Besides The Bible, what is one book you think should be mandatory reading for high school students? Why?

I can't think of a particular book title, but I do believe each student should read the Constitution ..... the original and not one that's being altered today. Along with that they should include the history behind it ,... who were the men that wrote it and why. Our younger generation does not know the foundation on which our great country was built on.

7. I went shopping at some nearby outlets last week, and while I was there, I picked up a couple of Christmas gifts. How about you? Have you started your holiday shopping yet?

No, I have not. I've thought about it, but I haven't decided what to buy for who. I usually don't get started until the first of December. I like to have the Thanksgiving turkey fullly digested before I start on the next holiday.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

My mind has been on my #3 daughter since our telephone conversation yesterday. She has a huge professional decision to make this week and I'm praying for God's help in her making the right choice.

Tues. Oct 8, 2013

The last couple days we've had dreary, rainy, cold,  "not really with it", kind of weather. It caused the sinuses and the brain to bother my head to the point I wished it belonged to someone else, but I'm not a mean person so I kept it and dealt with it.

I did try to get in some practice yesterday, but the sound of each note made my ears ring louder. Last evening I tried visiting with people on FB, but the only thing I did was play a couple games, then went to bed. Today the sun is shining and the temperature is forecasted to be 70°, so I feel much better.

My daughter #2 was down again this weekend from Michigan. We got to visit with her and her husband Mike for a couple hours, but that's never enough. They came down to help his brothers with their yearly chore of making apple cider, while the ladies made apple pies and apple butter. It takes several people and several hours to get all this done in one day. But they do it. We got some of Lori's apple butter and apple jam. So good.

My plans for today include going to CVS to pick up my prescription, doing some dusting and I have a piano lesson this afternoon, so I need to get in some practice to get my fingers warmed up.

I hope you have a good day.
Until next time.............

Family

All my life, family has been at the top of my list as a priority.... something to hold onto... something that defines most of what and who I am. I've taught my 3 daughters from the time they were little, that even though they argue among themselves, which is normal, do not ever let the disagreement fester and drive a wedge between you.

Then there's our extended family... the aunts, uncles, and cousins. I am fortunate to have my mother's side of her family that has been close to me all my life and have always been there for me. However, on my father's side, they are all a 'different breed'. They were never close, to us or themselves. They never showed compassion for anyone, that I know of. My father had 2 brothers and when they moved their families far away many years ago, we were all forgotten. Until recently.

One of my cousins, Karen, is now trying, I think, to have a family relationship with me. I've not heard from her in 46 years. Before her father, my dad's brother, died, he drove by himself from LasVegas, where they all live, to Ohio to see some old friends and he came here. It was a very uncomfortable conversation. We didn't know what to say to each other. This man was a stranger to me. He was in his 80's at the time and died a few months after that trip. As I watched him sitting at my kitchen table, I couldn't help but worry about him making the drive back to Nevada and I made him promise he would let me know that he had gotten home safe. He never did.

He and I had been sharing correspondence for awhile about the family for my genealogy research. I knew he had some information I could record about his parents and their parents. He had very little to tell me about them. Most of the information he sent me was about his 3 daughters and their children. But I appreciated what he did send me.

Now his daughter Karen has been sending me emails. We never got along when we were young. She and her sisters were mean and 'upidy', always thought they were better than us. I'm sure that came from their mother, but I won't speak ill of the dead. The girls were always doing things then blaming it on us so we got the punishment. Now with each email from her, I keep hoping that maybe she's changed, grown up, now that we're both old ladies. Sadly, that's not the case. Recently she's said some things that have just rubbed me the wrong way. I know this all sounds childish, but there are other things that have left me with scars that go deep. However, now I must put the past behind me and do my best to make God pleased with me. I must forgive her.

The bottom line......... now I have to practice what I've preached. She's family.

Friday, Oct. 4

We are in Day 4 of the government shutdown and stories are surfacing about the effects on some people. I've gotten hooked on a radio talk show every afternoon on AFR (American Family Radio). A gentleman called in today to talk about his insurance under the "Affordable Care Act". He said he's going to have to find another job to pay the premiums which will now cost him $2400 instead of the $1100 he paid before and under the new rulings he can't keep his same doctor. This is just contrary to what we were told. How can they still say this is good for the American people?

Then on the news last night, they were talking about the high traffic volume on the marketplace web site that was knocking folks offline and the phone lines are so swamped, people haven't been able to get through. I guess that's a mess.

And today, have you heard the latest? Big O has now shut down the grocery stores/commissaries on ALL military bases, here and overseas. ALSO he's shut off all NFL and baseball games to our military. They cannot watch any ball games, but he's still got his golf courses and leisure trips. He's also ordered the barricades at the memorial to be wired together to keep the vets out that are coming in on Honor Flights and he ordered park security to arrest anyone who attempts to break through.
This has become a huge mess and I don't see it coming to a close very soon, unless the news I heard just a few minutes ago is right. John Boener has conceded to the Democrats and is in favor of raising the debt ceiling, which is what they wanted in the beginning.

I received the following in an email today and I can't find anything to argue with here.
Did you know OBAMA RATED 5TH BEST PRESIDENT IN OUR HISTORY
From a total of 44 US Presidents: Obama rated 5th best president ever.
A Democratic publicity release said,
"... after a little more than 5 years, Americans have rated President Obama the 5th best president ever."
The details according to White House Publicists:
Reagan and Lincoln tied for first,
23 presidents tied for second,
17 other presidents tied for third,
Jimmy Carter came in 4th, and
Obama came in fifth.

That's enough of that. My head hurts from thinking about all this information today.

On a brighter note, our grand-daughter Hollie has moved. No, that's not the good news. She's too far from home. I miss her alot, but I'm also happy for her. She and her fiance are now living in Pensacola, Florida in a beautiful home. Cass has taken a good job down there. They just got furniture moved in Tuesday.

We ran out to the grocery this afternoon and we had just gotten home when some strange looking clouds rolled in. We weren't sure if it was going to be a bad storm or what it was going to do. I just know it looked very weird, but so far all we've gotten is a few sprinkles. It had me very concerned because of the heat and humidity being so high. We turned the a/c back on, it was so miserable in here. Then I remembered back to November 10, 2002. The weather was just like this when a huge tornado formed and took out part of our town and a few citizens. That was the scariest day of my life.

"Intellect does not always lead to good policy decisions, especially when it’s power and control they want."

I hope you've had a good day.
Until later..............

A gallon of milk

A young man had been to Wednesday night Bible Study. The Pastor had shared about listening to God and obeying the Lord's voice. The young man couldn't help but wonder, "Does God still speak to people?"
After service he went out with some friends for coffee and pie and they discussed the message. Several different ones talked about how God had led them in different ways. It was about ten o'clock when the young man started driving home. Sitting in his car, he just began to pray, "God...If you still speak to people speak to me. I will listen. I will do my best to obey."

As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the strangest thought to stop and buy a gallon of milk. He shook his head and said out loud, "God is that you?" He didn't get a reply and started on toward home. But again, the thought, buy a gallon of milk.

The young man thought about Samuel and how he didn't recognize the voice of God, and how little Samuel ran to Eli. "Okay, God, in case that is you, I will buy the milk." It didn't seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could always use the milk. He stopped and purchased the gallon of milk and started off toward home.

As he passed Seventh Street, he again felt the urge, "Turn Down that street." This is crazy he thought and drove on past the intersection. Again, he felt that he should turn down Seventh Street. At the next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh. Half jokingly, he said out loud, "Okay, God, I will".

He drove several blocks, when suddenly, he felt like he should stop. He pulled over to the curb and looked around. He was in the semi-commercial area of town. It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst of neighborhoods either. The businesses were closed and most of the houses looked dark like the people were already in bed.

Again, he sensed something, "Go and give the milk to the people in the house across the street." The young man looked at the house. It was dark and it looked like the people were either gone or they were already asleep. He started to open the door and then sat back in the car seat. "Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake them up, they are going to be mad and I will look stupid." Again, he felt he should go and give the milk.

Finally, he opened the door, "Okay God, if this is you, I will go to the door and I will give them the milk. If you want me to look like a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess that will count for something but if they don't answer right away, I am out of here."

He walked across the street and rang the bell. He could hear some noise inside. A man's voice yelled out, "Who is it? What do you want?" Then the door opened before the young man could get away.
The man was standing there in his jeans and T-shirt. He looked like he just got out of bed. He had a strange look on his face and he didn't seem too happy to have some stranger standing on his doorstep. "What is it?"

The young man thrust out the gallon of milk, "Here, I brought this to you." The man took the milk and rushed down a hallway. Then from down the hall came a woman carrying the milk toward the kitchen. The man was following her holding a baby. The baby was crying. The man had tears streaming down his face.

The man began speaking and half crying, "We were just praying. We had some big bills this month and we ran out of money. We didn't have any milk for our baby. I was just praying and asking God to show me how to get some milk."

His wife in the kitchen yelled out, "I ask him to send an Angel with some. Are you an Angel?" The young man reached into his wallet and pulled out all the money he had on him and put in the man's hand. He turned and walked back toward his car and the tears were streaming down his face. He knew that God still answers prayers.

Sometimes it's the simplest things that God asks us to do that cause us, if we are obedient to what He's asking, to be able to hear His voice more clear than ever. Please listen, and obey! It will bless you (and the world). Phil 4:13

Hodgepodge for 10/2/2013

It's 'hodgepodge" Wednesday again, already, so that means another collection of questions to answer. I hope you enjoy.

1. What's one thing you learned in September?
I learned my daughter had gotten her license and paperwork finished to start her own massage therapy business. She was so nervous, still is, about getting all her "ducks in a row" with the governing powers. Finally, after all the hard work and sacrifices, September brought it all to a reality. I'm so proud of her.

2. Acorn squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, yellow squash, zucchini squash, or blech! hold the squash... what's your favorite squash? What's your favorite way to prepare your favorite squash?
Acorn! With brown sugar and butter in the hauled out center and baked. We love them.

3. The older I get the______________.
more I become my mother. But that's not a bad thing!! I hope I stay like this because she was the strongest, kindest person I've ever known.

4. What's your favorite television theme song ever?
I have had so many favorite TV shows from way back, but not many have had a particular theme song I would say was a favorite. I like the song from MASH but not the lyrics. The same can be said for The Sopranos theme song. Right now, today, I will say the theme from CSI: NY.

5. What do you wish you'd spent more time doing five years ago?
Exercising! I got lazy and now my body is showing it --- muscles getting weaker.

6. What item do you most need (or want) to add to your wardrobe this fall?
Just one item? I need a whole new wardrobe. One item? Warm boots for getting through the snow.

7. On October 2, 1950 the Peanuts cartoon was introduced to the world. What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?
Bugs Bunny..... born July 27, 1940. A true sign of a good cartoon character is their life span. I used to watch him every Sat. morning growing up, then my children watched him and my grandchildren could occasionally find him on one of the cable channels. I think Bugs may be fading off into the horizon but he should be labeled a legend.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I have an iPhone 4, which has worked just fine and made me happy for the last year and a half, but when Apple made us download the new updated software this past week, my phone hasn't been the same or worked the same. I'm not happy with it and I haven't heard anyone say they are either. Apple has gone with white backgrounds on the apps which is not good for someone with my eye sight. They've added new animations which people are complaining makes them dizzy. Plus I have some 3rd party apps that don't want to play nice with the new changes. I'm trying to work around the problems and hopefully I'll get used to the "new" phone but it's been a struggle.

Until next time..........

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013

The calendar may say October, but I'm not sure what our thermometer is saying. It was 79° today, after the dark clouds moved out of the way. It was still a beautiful day.

The month of October is national COOKIE month!! Oh, yes! I'm thinking of doing some baking. Maybe peanut butter cookies! My favorite. Or maybe oatmeal cookies. Then again, maybe sugar cookies.

Not much happening around here. Daughter #3 stopped by after work. Her boss has moved the massage salon to a new location.... on Main Street. The last several days has been very hectic for our girl. But now that all the remodeling is done and they've officially opened the 'new doors' she feels much better.

Our government is in such a mess today. Now they've officially gone into a shut-down, I wonder what that will mean to so many people. The stories are starting to surface. I heard parts of the president's speech this afternoon and he aggravated me so much, which usually happens when he opens his mouth. Of course, it's all the republican's fault, according to him, and he's "willing to work with them". That's not what he said last night. More lies.

I have a heavy heart tonight. All around me are people who are hurting, people I know and care deeply for. There are physical pains and emotional pain. My heart goes out for each one of them and pray God will hear their prayers and mine.

With that, I'm closing down and heading for bed and a very exciting mystery book I'm reading. It kept me awake until 2:00 am this morning before I could put it down.

I hope you have a good day.
Until later.........
